It takes two to tango
A documentary discussion of values based on fifteen films for children and young people
60% film
20% documentation
20% experience

It takes two to tango – that also goes for documentary film, which has always aimed to engage in critical analysis with the aid of fictitious, experimental or supposedly unrealistic film strategies. The moral value of the documentary image was and is subject to doubt, that are based above all on aesthetic arguments: whether one can (or may) speak documentarily and about what is decided by means of an approach to tricky subjects.
If veracity alone does not determine the value of the documentary image, we must ask which film strategies co-determine the perception of reality and what value we attach to these strategies: Do authentic images have greater documentary value than fictionalised, subjective portrayals of reality? What is the value of the realistic image compared with other forms of visualisation, acoustic and linguistic levels of meaning? How rational does the documentary film need to be, and how much heart can one put into it?
When two people argue, the third gains: In this vein, “It takes two to tango” presents very different answers to the question of how documentary work should comport itself towards reality.
