Research Report You Are Here

Research Report You Are Here, 2010
Interdisciplinary research project based on a proposal by Andrea Fraser German and English edition available at the exhibition pavilion at Tummelplatz as well as download »here

Our encounter, that was to lead to a fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration, began with the US-American artist Andrea Fraser, known primarily for her performance and installation work and for institutional critique, and French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, who now ranks among the classics of sociology. As part of “Utopia and Monument II”, and following Bourdieu, Fraser had conceived the project “You Are Here” for steirischer herbst, that sees
the city as a social space, as a mesh of relationships of actors, institutions and organizations in which artistic representations are embedded. The ultimate aim was to represent – i.e. to visualize for the visitor – these manifold interrelations that construct the stage upon which everyone involved in “Utopia and Monument II” operates in ten “urban maps,” “by making reference to the respective focal issues of the individual exhibition projects.”
On the basis of Fraser’s concept, and consulting experts from the art scene, a research design was developed that set out firstly to analyze the mesh of interdependencies between the artists, catalogue authors, and individuals involved in the “Utopia and Monument II” project. In t his context the aim was to examine the selected group with regard to its social, cultural and economic capital. Furthermore, the project analyzed the economic capital of steirischer herbst (public subsidization and sponsoring by private companies) and the corresponding political interconnections at a meso- and macro-level. Secondly – in keeping with the title “You Are Here” – the project also incorporated socio-demographic data (gender, age distribution, ethnic origin, etc.) of the actors living at the various sites of the exhibition and of the visitors to art exhibitions. The ten maps, finally, constitute an artistic visualization of the results of the sociological analyses. Art, sociology and information design from their respective fields combine in “You Are Here” in a transdisciplinary manner. (AE/SH)
