Tummelplatz

With the pavilion re-installed on Tummelplatz, it is now positioned in an urban context that differs markedly from the previous, quiet site at the Platz der Freiwilligen Schützen, alongside Bad zur Sonne. While last year the pavilion defined a public interior that was delimited from the surroundings and raised off the ground, it now opens up to a larger public on busy Tummelplatz. The walls of the pavilion are placed directly on the floor covering the square, without a bedplate, with a structure supporting them from the outside. They are unfolded out in such a way that the exhibition space opens onto the urban setting, thus redefining part of Tummelplatz as a venue and meeting-place. The pavilion is open to visitors at any time of day. Communicative infrastructures will be added to the pavilion for a more in-depth exploration of the exhibition displays on the topic of “Art and the public space” printed on the walls. Inside, this creates three open zones that each offers space for various possible uses. A pergola suggests a stage area. A door provides access to a room lying beyond the exhibition wall. A short section of wall in the entrance area is transformed into a display element for additional information. Students of the Institute for Contemporary Art at Graz University of Technology elaborated the programmed and specific design of these areas based on their physical
configuration.

Presentation of the works of the students on 30/09, 07/10 & 14/10, each at 5 pm.
From 11/10 - 23/10 a course on “Utopia and Monument II” will take place in the pavilion.
